Ford Mustang

That's the view most people had of us while crossing the US.
In fact - !!! - I got a speeding ticket in Colorado. It was a total speed trap on the edge of a tiny town, so they can kiss my ass.

rt 66 boat in the desert
Seen along Route 66 northeast of Oatman, Arizona. Along this stretch we crossed paths with two carloads of Dutch tourists who were also taking fotos of America's quirky southwest and the old Mother Road.

Why the boat over here ..... Tue 3-Nov-2009 04:41

Oatman, Arizona

Along the nearly abandoned Mother Road, Route 66, in downtown Oatman, Arizona.

Loyal customers line up for... for... I don't know what they want. Word is these donkeys, or asses, or burros, as they are known locally, were used by miners a century ago. The animals were set free or escaped, and have been living wild in the city and surrounding hills ever since.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-il-walkingroute66,0,1597087.story

An old work truck on the hillside. Not much has happened here in the past 50 years, except tourism and the occasional visit by a celebrity, or a famous arrest happens ( see OK City bomber: http://www.nytimes.com/1995/05/13/us/terror-in-oklahoma-the-overview-bomb-inquiry-leads-to-arrest-of-biochemist.html?pagewanted=all ). There used to be about 4,000 folks in town after a couple of dudes kicked open a $1M gold mine one afternoon in 1915, but now about 100 people live here.

North Rim, Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA

This is crazy, but the peaks sort of in the foreground on the left side - the peaks and valleys that come up from the floor of the canyon...? Guess how far away they are.
From where one stands on the rim of the Grand Canyon, there is a faint impression that with a really good throwing arm, a small rock could be hurled across to those things on the left.
But no! They are about five miles away! The immensity of the place is incredible. For a long time, when there were no other tourists making sounds, I listened to the wind and watched hawks soaring on the updrafts. It becomes evident that this really is a sacred place.

Saving The Past For The Future

Looky what I found today while out junking with missus JP: it's a vintage boat prow ornament: a grab handle and a pretty gal. Wouldn't that look great on the hood of a rat rod? So it's going into storage for now....

Apostrophe Abuse

Blatant apostrophe abuse spotted in Oatman, Arizona, along old Route 66.
Being remote, backwoods and hicky is no excuse!

im with tareth...i wouldn't even be half-way up before i started freaking out. . the lighting on this is awesome..

i used to watch that show i think on discovery, where they would say in 50 years time without humans, this is what this building would look like and over a 100 years..etc.. but it bothered me because they put in some hypothetical situations and wasn't really fact driven..but that stuff is so fascinating.

the building i shot was over 100 years old..but as far as i know, it was still being used about 40 years ago..It's Old Bryce Mental Hospital (also known as the Jemison hospital) if you want to read about it..
