Sandy Hook National Park New Jersey Fort Hancock

Sandy Hook National Park is a spit of land that sticks out into the New York Bay shared by Staten Island, New York. As such, it was during times of war a vital location for defense of this country's maritime border.
Fort Hancock is a decommissioned Army post that had live defenses built into the sand, but also was an artillery test range. Large guns, firing ten and twelve inch rounds, were fired down the beach to measure speed and accuracy.
Much of the original installation is there for the public to see, minus the guns themselves. The concrete bunkers and mounts have largely been hidden by sands and trees, but the park has also made them accessible via a network of paved trails. Signs and old photos are posted with information about the Army's mission.
I went here twice, once by myself on what turned out to be a very rainy evening, and again with my workmates. On that second trip, we parked at the first lot and biked the park from end to end.
After that we had a fantastic dinner of fresh seafood at a local restaurant. Good times!

New Jersey diner along Route 130.

Dinners are some unknown charms over here! I love them, each one with its own atmosphere, its particular owner and ever returning characters... Nice documentary shot! Wed 5-Aug-2009 12:22

Sometimes I want to walk into an old diner and sit an a booth alone. Maybe I'll be even more mysterious and flip through a juke box if there is one. I like to people watch, so I'll sit somewhere with a good view of the entire place. I'll order pie. Apple pie a la mode. I'd invite you to join me, but I'd like to maintain the air of mystery around me. That's hard to do as it is with a bulging baby belly.

There aren't many diners around here anymore, but I do like to make the drive some early mornings or late nights to one not very far. There are always such characters inside.

Sandy Hook Stormy

The weather here in NJ has been hot... HOT!... and rainy. Cloudy, humid, sunny, thunderstorms, cloudy then sunny again.
On my first trip out to Sandy Hook on the Jersey shore, I got to the state park just in time for the first scene. There was serious rain, big wind, hail, lightning (a guy was struck by lightning on the beach and killed while I was there)... and I had gone out to explore and ride my bike.
Check out the sideways rain.

And then when the rain stopped, I was greeted by the rainbow scene. Awwww....!

Beautiful rainbow shot! Sat 1-Aug-2009 15:04

Did you pick up some salt water taffy? Fri 31-Jul-2009 09:24

I didn't even see signs for it, so wasn't aware that I should have found taffy.
Or... I saw the signs but didn't SEE them. I'm not a candy lover unless it's Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.
