This is crazy, but the peaks sort of in the foreground on the left side - the peaks and valleys that come up from the floor of the canyon...? Guess how far away they are.
From where one stands on the rim of the Grand Canyon, there is a faint impression that with a really good throwing arm, a small rock could be hurled across to those things on the left.
But no! They are about five miles away! The immensity of the place is incredible. For a long time, when there were no other tourists making sounds, I listened to the wind and watched hawks soaring on the updrafts. It becomes evident that this really is a sacred place.
